Neutering is one of the most important decisions you can make for your pet's long-term health.
With some exceptions, we recommend neutering from around five to six months of age, although the best timing can vary depending on your pet's breed and size.
Health Benefits of Neutering
The health benefits of neutering are significant. In females, spaying prevents unwanted pregnancies and greatly reduces the risk of mammary tumours and life-threatening womb infections (pyometra). In males, castration reduces roaming behaviour, territorial aggression, and the risk of certain cancers including testicular cancer.
Neutering also helps with the wider problem of pet overpopulation in Ireland. Ireland has a serious cat overpopulation issue in particular, with thousands of unwanted kittens born every year. Neutering your pet is one of the most responsible things you can do as a pet owner.
What to Expect
At Croi na Mara Vets in Briarhill and Oranmore, our neutering service includes the surgery in our dedicated operating theatre, pain relief, a protective collar, and post-operative check- ups. Your pet will be in experienced hands throughout. We use gas anaesthesia with continuous monitoring to keep your pet safe during the procedure.
Most pets recover quickly after neutering. We will send your pet home with clear aftercare instructions, pain relief, and a follow-up appointment. Most dogs and cats are back to their usual selves within a few days, although we recommend limiting exercise for 10 to 14 days to allow the wound to heal.
Alternatives to Traditional Neutering
We also offer some alternatives to traditional surgical neutering, including chemical castration for male dogs. This is a temporary, non-surgical option that can be useful if you want to see how your dog responds to reduced hormone levels before committing to permanent surgery. If you would like to explore your options, just ask.
