Our pets are part of our families, and living in such close contact with them means it is important to stay on top of parasite control, both for your pet's health and for your family's.
Why Parasite Control Matters
Parasites are more than just a nuisance. Fleas can cause severe itching, skin infections, and allergic reactions. Some dogs and cats are so sensitive to flea bites that a single flea can trigger weeks of scratching and discomfort. In young or small animals, a heavy flea infestation can even cause anaemia.
Worms are equally concerning. Roundworms, tapeworms, and lungworms are all common in Irish pets. Roundworms in particular can be passed to humans, especially children, which is another important reason to keep your pet's treatment up to date. Lungworm, spread through slugs and snails, can cause serious illness in dogs if left untreated.
Common Parasites in Ireland
At Croi na Mara Vets in Briarhill and Oranmore, we regularly see and treat the following parasites:
Fleas
The most common external parasite. They live in your pet's coat and in your home (carpets, bedding, soft furnishings).
Ticks
Found in long grass and hedgerows. They attach to your pet's skin and can transmit diseases.
Roundworms
Very common in puppies and kittens. Can be passed to humans.
Tapeworms
Often picked up from fleas or from hunting.
Lungworm
Spread through slugs and snails. Can be serious if untreated.
Prevention Is Better Than Cure
We stock a wide range of parasite prevention options, from tasty tablets to spot-on solutions, so we can find the right fit for your pet. The best approach depends on your pet's age, lifestyle, and risk factors. A dog that spends a lot of time outdoors in long grass will need different protection than an indoor-only cat.
We recommend year-round parasite prevention rather than just treating during the warmer months. Fleas can survive indoors all year, and some worms have no season.
