"You are what you eat" applies to our pets too.
Good nutrition is one of the foundations of a healthy, happy life for your dog, cat, or small pet.
Getting the Basics Right
We generally advise feeding your pet a good quality commercial food as the basis of their diet. Dry food (kibble) has the advantage of being convenient and helping to keep teeth cleaner, while wet food (tins and pouches) can be useful for pets who need extra hydration or who are fussy eaters. Many pets do well on a combination of both.
Every pet is different, and the right diet depends on their age, breed, size, activity level, and state of health. A growing puppy has very different nutritional needs to a senior dog with kidney disease, and an indoor cat needs fewer calories than one that spends the day outdoors.
Life Stage Feeding
At Croi na Mara Vets, we can advise on the best nutrition for your pet at any stage of life:
Puppies and kittens
Need higher calorie, nutrient-dense food to support rapid growth. We recommend a quality puppy or kitten food for at least the first 12 months.
Adult pets
A balanced maintenance diet to keep them in good body condition. We can help you choose the right food and the right portion size.
Senior pets
May need a diet adjusted for lower activity levels, joint support, or specific health conditions. Senior-specific diets are available.
Pregnant or nursing pets
Have significantly increased nutritional demands. We can advise on the best approach.
Weight Management
Obesity is one of the most common health problems we see in pets, and it contributes to conditions like arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and a shorter lifespan. If your pet is carrying extra weight, even a small amount of weight loss can make a noticeable difference to their health and energy levels.
We offer free weight clinics and can help you create a realistic weight management plan for your pet. Sometimes a simple change in portion size or food type is all it takes.
Prescription Diets
We stock a range of prescription diets for pets with specific health needs, including kidney support, gastrointestinal conditions, urinary health, skin allergies, and weight management. These are specially formulated foods that can form an important part of your pet's treatment plan.
If you are unsure about what to feed your pet, or if your pet has a specific dietary need, feel free to contact our Galway vet team for advice. We are always happy to help.
