Why We Recommend Pet Insurance

Veterinary medicine has advanced enormously in recent years. We can now offer treatments that were simply not available a decade ago, including MRI scans, chemotherapy, cardiology, orthopaedic surgery, and specialist referrals. These treatments can make a real difference to your pet's quality of life, but they come with significant costs.

Insurance makes it easier to say yes to the treatment your pet needs without having to worry about the bill. We see firsthand the difference it makes. Insured pets often get the treatment they need quickly, while uninsured owners sometimes face difficult decisions based on cost rather than what is best for their pet.

What to Look For in a Policy

Not all pet insurance policies are created equal. Here are some things to consider when choosing a policy:

Lifetime cover vs Annual cover

Lifetime policies renew the claim limit each year, which is better for chronic or ongoing conditions. Annual policies reset the limit but may exclude conditions you have already claimed for.

Excess

This is the amount you pay towards each claim. A lower excess means you pay less out of pocket, but the monthly premium may be higher.

Exclusions

Check what is not covered. Pre-existing conditions are almost always excluded, which is why insuring your pet while they are young and healthy is the best approach.

Vet fee limit

Make sure the annual vet fee limit is high enough. Specialist treatment or surgery can cost several thousand euros.
