At Croí na Mara Vets in Briarhill and Oranmore, we strongly believe that prevention is better than cure.
It is always heartbreaking to see an animal become ill with a disease that could have been prevented with a simple vaccination.
Why Vaccinations Matter
Vaccinations work by training your pet's immune system to recognise and fight specific diseases before they encounter them in real life. Without vaccination, diseases like parvovirus in dogs and cat flu in cats can be life-threatening, particularly in young animals. Some of these diseases are still common in Ireland, which is why keeping your pet's vaccinations up to date is so important.
Vaccinating your pet also helps protect other animals in the community. The more pets that are vaccinated, the harder it is for diseases to spread. This is especially important for puppies and kittens who have not yet completed their full vaccination course and are at higher risk.
What We Vaccinate Against
For dogs, we vaccinate against parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis, and leptospirosis. Kennel cough vaccination is also available and recommended for dogs that socialise with other dogs, attend day care, or stay in kennels.
For cats, we vaccinate against cat flu (feline herpesvirus and calicivirus) and feline panleukopaenia. If your cat goes outdoors, we also recommend vaccination against feline leukaemia virus.
Rabbits should be vaccinated against myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD), both of which can be fatal.
Our Approach
We do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. We tailor our vaccine schedules for each patient, making sure they have strong immunity without being over-vaccinated. During your pet's vaccination appointment, we also carry out a full health check, so it is a great opportunity to catch any issues early.
We recommend vaccinating all dogs from six weeks of age, all cats from nine weeks thereafter. If you have adopted an older pet and are unsure of their vaccination history, we can create a catch-up plan.
Book a Vaccination Appointment
If you are unsure whether your pet's vaccinations are up to date, or if you have a new puppy, kitten, or rabbit that needs their first jabs, get in touch with our team at our Briarhill or Oranmore vet clinic. We are always happy to chat through your options.
