Regular check-ups and screening tests are one of the best things you can do for your pet's health.

They help us spot issues before they become a problem, and early intervention can make all the difference in treating a disease successfully.

Why Regular Check-ups Matter

Our pets cannot tell us when something is wrong. Dogs and cats are naturally good at hiding pain and illness, which means that by the time you notice a change, the problem may already be advanced. A regular health check gives us the chance to catch things early, when treatment is most effective and often less costly.

At Croi na Mara Vets in Briarhill and Oranmore, we recommend seeing your pet for a full health examination at least once a year. We usually tie this in with their annual vaccination visit, so it is easy to keep on top of. If your pet is older or has a health condition, more frequent visits are better.

What Happens During a Health Check

During a health check, we examine your pet from nose to tail:

Heart and lungs

listening for any abnormal sounds or rhythms.

Teeth and gums

checking for dental disease, which is very common.

Eyes and ears

looking for infections, inflammation, or changes.

Skin and coat

checking for parasites, lumps, or skin conditions.

Joints and mobility

assessing for signs of arthritis or pain, especially in older pets.

Weight

monitoring body condition and discussing diet if needed.

Abdomen

feeling for any abnormalities in the organs.

Blood and Urine Testing

We may also recommend blood or urine tests, especially for older pets. These can detect conditions like kidney disease, diabetes, liver problems, thyroid disease, and anaemia before any symptoms appear. Early detection means we can manage these conditions and keep your pet comfortable for longer.

For senior pets (generally over seven years for dogs and over 10 years for cats), we recommend annual blood screening as part of their routine care.

If it has been a while since your pet had a check-up, or if you have noticed any changes in their behaviour, appetite, or energy levels, book an appointment with our Galway vet team.
